DJ Workshop & Showcase

In order to try to make this event as accessible as possible, registration cost is available in tiers. As always, we never want finances to hold you back from participating in the community! Please reach out for scholarship options.

This workshop will provide a unique blend of hands-on practice, real-world insights, collaborative spaces, and dedicated space to work on ideas and concepts presented. This progressive will include FOUR workshop sessions, TWO open-mic nights to get feedback on short sets, and ONE EXCITING Showcase event at the end of the progressive for participants to show off what the work they’ve put into growing their skills.

This is an in-person workshop only. We will not be having an online stream option for this event.

PLAYING FOR SWING DANCERS: Delve into the diverse genres of swing music, listen to their differences, their strengths, and how you can use them for different styles and moods

BUILDING FLOW: Learn how to structure a dynamic set list using tempo, energy, genres, and more to create smooth transitions throughout the night

TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY: Learn the basic equipment, get introduced to typical setups, explore ways to find new music and organize music in your library

READING THE ROOM: Tips for developing observational skills to assess the mood and energy of the dance floor in order to make the biggest impact

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Explore the ethical responsibilities of a DJ, including respect for musical history, supporting musicians, and fostering a welcoming dance environment

BUILDING YOUR DJ IDENTITY: Start to identify your unique sound and contributions to the swing dance community based on who you are and the sounds you lean into in your library.

NETWORKING AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: Connect with other DJs, dancers, and event organizers for a stronger, vibrant, and more collaborative swing dance community

TOOLS FOR GROWTH: Leave with tips and guides on how to continue to grow as a DJ

Whether you want to learn to do it yourself, or are just curious about what goes on in the mind of a DJ, this workshop will be fun, collaborative, and informative, and full of great music.
